What are Your Networking Opportunities?

Is ‘networking’ on your new year’s to-do list? Mine too! Let’s see how to identify which groups are right for us.

Before we begin, I think I can confidently say that levels of cynicism around networking are dissipating and are being replaced by the belief that, done properly, networking is an advantageous activity.  Comment below if your experience means you think otherwise. As treasured British television personality Mrs Merton would have said “Let’s have a heated debate!”

Wedding photographer Lisa North puts it well: “Business networking is a method of establishing a mutually beneficial relationship with other business people and potential clients and customers.” So how do you know which networking events are right for you?

Step One – Firstly reflect upon your unique situation. Successful networking will only be sustainable if it works for you and your business objectives. If you are completely honest with yourself, you will reap the rewards. Here are some things to consider:

  • How much are you willing to spend on membership/travel/other associated costs?
  • Do you want to go to female only groups?
  • What time of day do you prefer to network?
  • How regularly can you attend events?
  • Is an online group better for you?

Step Two – Next collate the networking opportunities that are out there. Do not worry if your first list is long. Apply your criteria from Step One and the list will soon narrow down.

Here is a sample of networking groups that exist in the vicinity of Clean Cut Media’s editing facility in Hampton Wick but which are also national (and sometimes international):

  • BNI (Business Network International)
  • The Athena Network
  • Glug Events
  • Royal Borough of Kingston Chamber of Commerce (Find your local Chamber)
  • Metro Bank Local Business events
  • Women in Business

Step Three – Get stuck in! Once you’re satisfied with your shortlist, speak to the group organiser, go along to a session, or contribute online.

Good luck on your journey, if our paths ever cross-please say hello!
