A still from the 2017 film Baby Driver

An Expert View: An Example of Great Camera Work

Thank you to Clean Cut Media Camera Operator Jack for telling us why Baby Driver is one of his favourite examples of great camerawork.
“For me it has to be Baby Driver, directed by Edgar Wright and with Bill Pope as Director of Photography (DOP).
For me this is everything that good cinema is all about. It’s incredibly slick, fun, over the top and exciting. Edgar Wright brings his incredible style of film making into this passion project and executes it perfectly. I have always been a huge fan of Bill Pope’s work he has worked on some of my favourite movies and TV shows of all time. He was DOP on The Matrix which would be in my top 5 for superb camerawork. He was also the DOP for the pilot of Freaks and Geeks which is a must watch series. From the very start of Baby Driver the camerawork is astounding.
The editing for the film was all done on site as the camera shots had to hit every beat perfectly. So for me this is not only a masterclass in cinematography but an example of a full crew working together seamlessly to create a fantastic film.
If you’re not already sold then then watch the coffee run scene! It explains perfectly what makes this film so clever and so good”.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                Thanks Jack!
